Collect Eternal God, you called N. to proclaim your glory    in a life of prayer and pastoral zeal: keep the leaders of your Church faithful and bless your people through their ministry, that the Church may grow into the full stature    of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. or, for a Bishop Almighty God, the light of the faithful and shepherd of souls, who set your servant N. to be a bishop in the Church, to feed your sheep by the word of Christ and to guide them by good example: give us grace to keep the faith of the Church and to follow in the footsteps    of Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

A reading from the First Book of Samuel. The Lord said to Samuel, ëHow long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.í When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ëSurely the Lordís anointed is now before the Lord.í But the Lord said to Samuel, ëDo not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.í Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, ëNeither has the Lord chosen this one.í Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, ëNeither has the Lord chosen this one.í Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, ëThe Lord has not chosen any of these.í Samuel said to Jesse, ëAre all your sons here?í And he said, ëThere remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.í And Samuel said to Jesse, ëSend and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.í He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, ëRise and anoint him; for this is the one.í Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah. This is the word of the Lord.         1 Samuel 16. 1, 6­13 A reading from the prophecy of Isaiah. In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: ëHoly, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.í The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: ëWoe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!í Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ëNow that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.í Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ëWhom shall I send, and who will go for us?í And I said, ëHere am I; send me!í This is the word of the Lord.         Isaiah 6. 1­8 A reading from the prophecy of Jeremiah. The word of the Lord came to me saying, ëBefore I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.í Then I said, ëAh, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.í But the Lord said to me, ëDo not say, ìI am only a boyî; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.í Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me, ëNow I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.í This is the word of the Lord.         Jeremiah 1. 4­10 A reading from the prophecy of Ezekiel. At the end of seven days, the word of the Lord came to me: Mortal, I have made you a sentinel for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. If I say to the wicked, ëYou shall surely die,í and you give them no warning, or speak to warn the wicked from their wicked way, in order to save their life, those wicked persons shall die for their iniquity; but their blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked, and they do not turn from their wickedness, or from their wicked way, they shall die for their iniquity; but you will have saved your life. Again, if the righteous turn from their righteousness and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before them, they shall die; because you have not warned them, they shall die for their sin, and their righteous deeds that they have done shall not be remembered; but their blood I will require at your hand. If, however, you warn the righteous not to sin, and they do not sin, they shall surely live, because they took warning; and you will have saved your life. This is the word of the Lord.         Ezekiel 3. 16­21 A reading from the prophecy of Malachi. My covenant with him was a covenant of life and well-being, which I gave him; this called for reverence, and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. True instruction was in his mouth, and no wrong was found on his lips. He walked with me in integrity and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity. For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts. This is the word of the Lord.         Malachi 2. 5­7

Responsorial Psalm R Delight in the law of the Lord! [Meditate on his law day and night]. Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful! Their delight is in the law of the Lord, and they meditate on his law day and night. R They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; everything they do shall prosper. R It is not so with the wicked: they are like chaff which the wind blows away. The Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked is doomed. R         From Psalm 1 Responsorial Psalm R Let us stay with the Lord all the days of our life [by speaking the truth from the heart]. Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? who may abide upon your holy hill? Whoever leads a blameless life and does what is right, who speaks the truth from the heart. R There is no guile upon his tongue; he does no evil to his friend; he does not heap contempt upon his neighbour. R In his sight the wicked are rejected, but he honours those who fear the Lord. He has sworn to do no wrong and does not take back his word. R He does not give his money in hope of gain, nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things shall never be overthrown. R         Psalm 15 Responsorial Psalm R O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; [it is you who uphold my lot].  My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; indeed, I have a goodly heritage. I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. R I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand I shall not fall. My heart, therefore, is glad and my spirit rejoices; my body also shall rest in hope. R For you will not abandon me to the grave, nor let your holy one see the Pit. You will show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Sing to the Lord and bless his name; proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations and his wonders among all peoples. R For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; he is more to be feared than all gods. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; but it is the Lord who made the heavens. R O the majesty and magnificence of his presence! O the power and the splendour of his sanctuary! Ascribe to the Lord, you families of the peoples; ascribe to the Lord honour and power. R Ascribe to the Lord the honour due to his name; bring offerings and come into his courts. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; let the whole earth tremble before him. R         From Psalm 96 Responsorial Psalm R In the beauty of holiness has God begotten you, [like dew from the womb of the morning]. The Lord said to my lord, ëSit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.í The Lord will send the sceptre of your power out of Zion, saying, ëRule over your enemies round about you. R ëPrincely state has been yours from the day of your birth, in the beauty of holiness have I begotten you, like dew from the womb of morning.í R The Lord has sworn and will not recant: ëYou are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.í He will drink from the brook beside the road; therefore he will lift high his head. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Keep watch over yourselves and over all the flock, of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God that he obtained with the blood of his own Son. I know that after I have gone, savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Some even from your own group will come distorting the truth in order to entice the disciples to follow them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to warn everyone with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the message of his grace, a message that is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all who are sanctified. I coveted no oneís silver or gold or clothing. You know for yourselves that I worked with my own hands to support myself and my companions. In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, ìIt is more blessèd to give than to receive.í This is the word of the Lord.         Acts 20. 28­35 A reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of Godís mysteries. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself. I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgement before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive commendation from God. This is the word of the Lord.         1 Corinthians 4. 1­5 A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. Since it is by Godís mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practise cunning or to falsify Godís word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. [And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.] For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesusí sake. For it is the God who said, ëLet light shine out of darkness,í who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. [We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.] This is the word of the Lord.         2 Corinthians 4. 1­10 (or 1, 2, 5­7) A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. The love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them. From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. This is the word of the Lord.         2 Corinthians 5. 14­20 A reading from the First Letter of Peter. As an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it ó not for sordid gain but eagerly. Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. This is the word of the Lord.         1 Peter 5. 1­4

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Jesus said, ëI thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. ëCome to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.í This is the gospel of the Lord.         Matthew 11. 25­30 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Jesus said to his disciples, ëKeep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. ëWho then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessèd is that servant whom his master will find at work when he arrives.í This is the gospel of the Lord.         Matthew 24. 42­46 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Jesus said to the Pharisees, ëI am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away ó and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.í This is the gospel of the Lord.         John 10. 11­16 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Fatherís commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. ëThis is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down oneís life for oneís friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.í This is the gospel of the Lord.         John 15. 9­17 Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ëSimon son of John, do you love me more than these?í He said to him, ëYes, Lord; you know that I love you.í Jesus said to him, ëFeed my lambs.í A second time he said to him, ëSimon son of John, do you love me?í He said to him, ëYes, Lord; you know that I love you.í Jesus said to him, ëTend my sheep.í He said to him the third time, ëSimon son of John, do you love me?í Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, ëDo you love me?í And he said to him, ëLord, you know everything; you know that I love you.í Jesus said to him, ëFeed my sheep.í This is the gospel of the Lord.         John 21. 15­17

Post Communion God, shepherd of your people, whose servant N. revealed the loving service of Christ    in his/her ministry as a pastor of your people: by this eucharist in which we share awaken within us the love of Christ and keep us faithful to our Christian calling; through him who laid down his life for us, but is alive and reigns with you, now and for ever.
